When do I send my save the dates?

Sending Save the Dates is such an exciting step in your wedding planning process. Seeing your names and wedding date in print makes the whole thing feel super…official!

But when should you mail your Save the Dates? Sending them as soon as you set a wedding date may actually be too soon. But wait too long and your loved ones calendars may begin to fill up.

The short story is – Save the Dates should be sent 6-8 months before your wedding date. If your wedding is being held in a popular location, is a destination wedding or is on a holiday weekend, sending them 9-12 months ahead of time will give your guests a little extra time to plan and budget.

The best part about sending save the dates is that you don’t need a lot of details set to do so. Your names and wedding date are the only information your guests need to mark their calendars. Unless you’re having a destination wedding, including the city and state is recommended, but not required.

Step One: Set Your Wedding Date
An official wedding date (often driven by venue availability) is a must.

Step Two: Schedule Engagement Photos
Many couples include an engagement photo on their Save the Dates. If you’d like to, be sure to schedule a session and allow plenty of time for your photographer to get images back to you. We recommend taking engagement photos at least a full year before your wedding.

Step Three: Make Your Guest List
The hardest thing you’ll have to do before sending save the dates is choosing who will receive them. Also remember – you only need one Save the Date per household, not per guest.
