Your maid of honor is likely your best friend, sister and the girl that has been by your side through the good times and bad. Now it’s up to her to help you through one of the biggest and most exciting day of your life. But if neither of you have been a maid of honor in the past, it can be difficult to know exactly what her duties are. After all, weddings are hard work, so it’s important to be able to depend on someone to pull you through it. Here are the main responsibilities for your maid of honor:

Be the leader of the bridesmaids
The maid of honor should essentially be in charge of all the bridesmaids. She directs the other girls through their duties and makes sure everyone gets the proper dress, jewelry, hairstyle, makeup, etc. The MOH should also be giving them the low-down on all the parties, like the bachelorette party, engagement party and the rehearsal dinner.

Offer to help
There’s a lot to plan for, from addressing the wedding invitations and figuring out the guest list to meeting with the florist and choosing a seating arrangement. The MOH should always be nearby to help with the little details, which can often be overwhelming for just one person.

Be a shoulder to lean on
While planning for the big day is so exciting, at moments, it can be frustrating. The moments where you feel sad, angry or annoyed is when you can go to your MOH so she can lend an ear.

Host the bridal shower/bachelorette party
The MOH should brush up on her party planning skills, because she is in charge of both the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. Get together with all of the bridesmaids to set a date for both and come up with a theme that revolves around the bride’s passions and interests.

Help with the big day look
The MOH is there to make sure that you look flawless on your wedding day. She’ll keep an eye on the little things, like a small hair sticking up, food in your teeth or a bra strap out of place. Your best friend should be by your side, helping you look beautiful before you make your grand entrance down the aisle.

In charge of gifts
The maid of honor should keep a record of the gifts received at various pre-wedding showers or parties. This will make it easier for the bride to know who to send each thank you card to.
