The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was certainly one of the first to bring this trend back – and she proved that wearing a dress with sleeves can be just as sexy and beautiful as one without. In fact, top designers like Marchesa, Oscar de la Renta, Monique Lhuilier and Carolina Herrera showed off their new long sleeve wedding dresses at the Spring 2013 Bridal Fashion Week.
One vintage trend sweeping the bridal industry is capped sleeves. They offer just enough coverage to by mysterious, elegant and timeless. Whether they’re ruffled, embellished or made of lace, this little detailing can go a long way.
The sweetheart neckline
Whether it’s a strapless gown or a dress with an illusion neckline, the sweetheart style is hot among today’s brides. It shows off the skin without revealing too much. This style was first introduced in the 1950s, popularized by Elizabeth Taylor in the original “Father of the Bride.”
Instead of showing off arms, shoulders and back, some brides are opting to show off their slender legs. Short dresses with high sleeves or necklines provide a unique look for a less formal occasion. Short gowns are also perfect for destination weddings because the bottom won’t drag in the sand. Shorter wedding dresses were all the rage back in the 1940s to suit the needs of a wartime women. They had skirts short enough to ride a bicycle and jackets buttoned high to the neck.
The idea of a flowing silhouette was introduced back in 1910. This loose-fitting, chic and feminine style is certainly popular today – especially for boho and beach weddings.
Corsets were typical of wedding gowns in the 1940s to bring the hips in for a slender figure. Brides today love this style because it shows off their curves so they can walk with confidence down the aisle.
Big layers and lace tiers were the style that many 50s brides rocked down the aisle. Today, it’s no different. The layers on the bottom half of the dress give it some volume and draw attention to the intricate detailing of the gown.
