Insure your ring
This is likely one of the most important pieces of jewelry that you will ever own, so you’ll want to keep that prized possession as safe as possible. Add a jewelry rider to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance or even take out a policy with a special jewelry insurer. Many policies will cover theft and reimburse repair costs. But make sure to read the fine print!
Cleaning your sparkler
Keep the bling in your ring by taking proper care of it. It’s important to remove your ring before putting on lotion or when participating sports that require your hands to do all the hard work. It’s also a good idea to take your engagement ring to a jeweler about once a year to have it inspected for any damage or loose settings. Due to everyday items like lotion, dirt and skin oil, the shine can easily be dulled. There are several ways to clean your ring right at home:
- Soak it in warm water and mild dishwashing liquid and scrub with a soft toothbrush.
- Let it soak in equal parts ammonia and cold water for about a half hour and let it air dry.
- Mix together one part baking soda and one part water in a clean glass. Scrub your ring with a soft toothbrush that has been dipped in the mixture. Then rinse the ring in cool water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Keep your ring safe
It’s very easy to take off your ring to wash your hands or do the dishes and forget about it, leaving it susceptible to the dangers of the garbage disposal or that curious cat that mistakes your ring for its newest play toy. Therefore, it’s a good idea to put your ring in a secure location every time you take it off. Make it a habit to put it in the same location. This could be a special jewelry box or even a memorable hiding spot.
