The way you address your wedding invitation envelopes says it all: who’s invited, if they can bring a guest and what the formality of the celebration will be. So make sure you address them right! The first thing you need to know is that most wedding invitations come with two envelopes, an inner envelope and an outer envelope.

Inner and Outer Envelopes Explained

The Inner Envelope

  • Holds the invitation and enclosure cards
  • Addressed with names only and informal titles, like “Uncle Joel and Aunt Kathy
  • Includes the names of everyone invited to the wedding (if your aunt and uncle have six children, and you’re inviting them all, every single name should be written on the inner envelope; omitting the names of the children means that only your aunt and uncle are invited)
  • Only include “and family” on the inner envelope if you are extending the invitation to an unlimited number of related guests
  • If you’re inviting a single guest and want them to feel free to bring a date, “and guest” should be added after the name of the invitee on the inner envelope

The Outer Envelope

  • Holds the inner envelope with the invitation and enclosure cards
  • Should be addressed with titles and full names spelled out (Doctor not Dr., William not Bill)
  • The only acceptable abbreviations are Mr., Mrs., Ms. and Jr.
  • Don’t use symbols
  • Spell out “and” instead of using an ampersand (&)
  • Address with the names of parents only; the names of all children invited should be written on the inner envelope
  • Spell out all numbers except house and apartment numbers (123 First Street) and ZIP codes
  • State names can be spelled out or abbreviated to the two-letter postal code (Minnesota or MN)
