Of course you love all of your friends’, cousins’ and siblings’ kids. They’re adorable, smart, playful…and really loud. If you’re thinking that the last thing you want on your wedding day is to listen to a child screaming during your wedding vows, then an adults-only wedding is probably in your plans.

There are a lot of creative ways to give the hint that guests should get a babysitter and leave the kids at home on your wedding day. The way you word your wedding invitation and enclosure cards is a great way to get the message across.

While it’s really not appropriate to mention “adults only” or “no children” on the invitation itself, you can be clear about your ceremony and reception location. By mentioning that your “intimate ceremony” will be taking place at a luxury hotel or your cocktail reception will be at a downtown nightclub, guests should understand that those are venues that aren’t appropriate for children.

Then address your envelopes to reflect your choice. If they know their etiquette, your guests will understand that only the people listed on the outer and inner envelopes are invited to the wedding. Be clear here, too.

Outer Envelope: Mr. and Mrs. Michael Callan

Inner Envelope: Mike and Julie

If you’re worried about them not getting the hint so far, you can word your response cards a little more bluntly, like this:

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Please respond by September 27, 2013

_______ Adults will attend

_______ Sorry to miss it!

And if you want to be extra-extra clear, you can just go ahead and say it, but only on your reception cards, like this:

Please celebrate with us

at an adults-only reception

immediately following the ceremony

at (location)…

Best wishes on sending the message that your wedding will be a grown-up affair!
